This is the forum to discuss silent films and that wonderful era
in which they were made, including the early Edison film experiments
and the days of the American Mutoscope & Biograph Company!

Post information about upcoming silent film festivals here too!

 KS FILM FESTIVAL PHOTOS 2009
« Thread Started on Mar 2, 2009, 3:19pm »

Well, here is the start of some of the photographs I took from this year's Kansas Silent Film Festival, which concluded this past weekend:

In this photo, we had finished setting up the glass display case with the items going into one of the three silent auctions we had this year. Looking on are Karl Mischler of New York City; Mr David Shepard; Melodie Foreman; Jane Bartholomew; and Bill Shaffer (Festival President).

On the right is a lobby card, displaying Bardleys the Magnificent, which had its USA premiere right here at our own Kansas Silent Film Festival!!!

Dr Marvin Faulwell rehearsing on the organ for one of the films he was to play for on Friday evening.

Here I am, standing between two of the greatest legends! On the left is Mr Nicholas Eliopoulos, who directed and edited Mary Pickford: Muse of the Movies, a documentary we aired during our Saturday morning schedule. On the right is Mr David Shepard, noted film historian and film preservationist. Formerly of Blackhawk Films, Mr Shepard was our special guest speaker at our Saturday evening dinner.

Here is Mr Eliopoulos, posing between the two posters he had commissioned. During our final intermission, a special auction was held for these two posters; the one on the left netted $125 and the one on the right .... well .... is now in my possession, due to TC receiving its winning bid!!! Furthermore, according to Mr Eliopoulos, it is one of only four that he had made, and he personally autographed it to me!

Here I am, standing between the two posters!

Due to an overnight snow we'd had in Topeka on Friday night, our fearless leader, Bill Shaffer was out shoveling the walkways before our Saturday morning line-up began.

There will be more photos to follow ...........

Here are a few more photos:

Take a look from above at these very pleasing crowds in the lobby!

Amongst our attendees were these two young ladies. Surely, I do not have to say who they were dressed as! Posing with the ladies is Karl Mischler of New York City, and our very own TC, of Larry's 66 Diner!

Posing with our film presenter and narrator, Denise Morrison, is the great Mr Nicholas Eliopolous again!

Jeff Rapsis, of New Hampshire, played on the piano during some of our intermission breaks, as well as providing entertainment at the Cinema Dinner Saturday evening.

Here are the members of the Mont-Alto Motion picture orchestra, posing with our sister-in-law, Phyllis, known here at the Diner as Hummingbird. From left to right are Rodney Sauer; Phyllis; Dawn Kramer; Britt Swenson; David Short; and Brian Collins.

More photos will follow later!

Here are a few more:

Getting things set up at our lobby tables. Looking on are Jeff Rapsis and his wife Susan; TC; Phyllis; and Karl.

The silent films turned out to be a joy for all ages, but I shot these to show that there were even children in attendance!!! In the third of these four photos (the boy in the yellow jacket) is Nick, a highly intelligent young man, fascinated by silents movies and quite knowledgeable of them, as well. He spent much time in the company of David Shepard!

Getting things set up for the sound in the theater, so we could view the Pickford documentary. Mr Eliopoulos was looking on (noticeable in the lower part of the photo).

Thanks for letting us see the photos, Larry. It makes me want to go. Maybe I'll try next year. By the way, I've never met David Shepard, but my impression in my mind has always been different from the way he looks. He appears to be a shrewd individual, one who knows one thing from another very well, one who discriminates between two things with taste. Appearances, I know. Don't judge a book by its cover. But - am I correct? I'm curious.

Michael, I would venture to say that you are probably right on the mark with your presumption. He is also very dignified, while diplomatic as well.

Mr Shepard is a highly intelligent individual who prides himself in his accomplishments, yet he does not appear to place himself ahead of others. When he spoke at our dinner Saturday evening, although he sometimes seemed to lose the attention of some, he delivered with style.

I wish you could some day meet him, Michael, because you would pleasantly be astonished! While realizing that he is another human, not different than myself, I occasionally feel as though I am in the presence of "greatness" when talking with him. :)

Here are a few more photos ......

Here is what the table settings looked like for our Saturday evening Cinema Dinner, before people were seated.

A closer look at the centerpieces:

At Mr Shepard's table at the onset of the evening. Mr Eliopoulos is seated beside him and Mr Shepard's young fan, Nick, looks on.

A few guests were seated at Dr Marvin Faulwell's table. Dr Faulwell (the festival's organist for the entire past 13 years) is facing the camera, joined by his wife, Mary (at far right).

A packed house! Karl Mischler is taking photos of this first-time event.

Phil Figgs, our festival's volunteer coordinator, listens as Mr Shepard gives a presentation on how film restoration is done.

The Chaplin cakes were good.

This was my first KSFF, but will not be my last. I haven't been able to attend in the past because of my job. The folks in Kansas put on a first-rate festival and are also some of the nicest people I've met. The films are excellent, although the projectionist needs a lesson or two in showmanship. It was a great weekend and I can hardly wait till next year.

Hedvig are you talking about the black and white or the color one??? The reason I ask is that Larry and I brought home the black and white one. [image] [image] [image] [image] [image] :-X :-X :-X :-X....... That's right we had a live auction and I jumped up on stage with Larry to help with the auction and guess what we got the bid..... :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*..... After we got the poster we found out there are only four such posters in existence.. Mr. Eliopoulos even signed our copy for us. We are going to get a nice frame for it and hang it in the living room.
